Uzbekistan Strengthens Global Ties at SCO Summit
President Mirziyoyev advances strategic trade and energy partnerships during high-level diplomatic meetings in Bishkek.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has utilized the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek to significantly bolster Uzbekistan's international standing. During the event, the President engaged in a series of high-level bilateral discussions with leaders from China, Russia, and other key global partners. These meetings were primarily aimed at expanding trade and investment portfolios, with a specific focus on energy, transport infrastructure, and industrial cooperation.
A major highlight of the summit was the dialogue with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both nations expressed a commitment to increasing bilateral trade to $30 billion. This ambitious goal builds upon the nearly $18 billion in trade recorded in 2025. Furthermore, the two leaders reviewed a substantial pipeline of joint investment projects valued at approximately $60 billion, signaling a deepening of economic integration between the two countries.
Economic cooperation with Russia also remains a cornerstone of the nation's foreign policy. Officials noted a 12 percent growth in bilateral trade since the start of 2026, with both sides pledging to accelerate collaboration in the metallurgy and energy sectors. Beyond economic metrics, the summit served as a platform for broader diplomatic engagement, including discussions with UN Secretary-General António Guterres regarding sustainable development initiatives.
Domestically, the government continues to prioritize socio-economic development programs as the country marks its 35th anniversary of independence. While the administration focuses on economic reforms and infrastructure projects—such as recent irrigation investments in the Ferghana Valley—observers note that these efforts are currently being prioritized over political pluralism or democratic reforms. As the nation moves forward, the government remains focused on maintaining social stability to support its long-term growth objectives.
