Uzbekistan Marks 35 Years of Independence Amid New Development Push

As Uzbekistan celebrated its 35th anniversary of independence in late August 2026, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev introduced a series of seven ambitious national programs. These initiatives are designed to drive socio-economic development across the country, focusing on infrastructure, agriculture, and industrial modernization. Notably, the government’s current agenda prioritizes social stability and economic expansion, while remaining cautious regarding political pluralism and democratic reforms.

The nation’s economic outlook remains robust, with the Asian Development Bank projecting strong growth of 6.7% for 2026. This momentum is supported by significant foreign direct investment and ongoing reforms aimed at improving water security and agricultural productivity, such as recent irrigation projects in the Ferghana Valley. Furthermore, the country is actively pursuing a "desert economy" strategy, which includes large-scale reforestation efforts to restore over a million hectares of land.

On the international stage, Uzbekistan has been aggressively expanding its strategic partnerships. Recent diplomatic activity includes the signing of an alliance treaty with Kyrgyzstan and the establishment of a joint medium-term program for strategic and innovative partnership with Singapore. These agreements emphasize cooperation in digitalization, technology transfer, and the development of special economic zones.

Diplomatic engagement remains a cornerstone of the administration's policy, with high-level visits from international leaders, including the Prime Minister of India, occurring during the independence celebrations. As the country looks toward 2030, the government continues to target a significant increase in GDP, aiming to solidify its position as a pivotal economic player in Central Asia.
