Uzbekistan Leverages SCO Summit to Strengthen Global Strategic Ties

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan has utilized the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek to conduct a series of critical bilateral meetings. These discussions aimed to deepen strategic partnerships with major global powers, including China, Russia, and the United States, as the nation seeks to expand its international influence and economic reach.

A primary focus of the summit was the enhancement of trade and energy infrastructure. Notably, talks between President Mirziyoyev and Chinese President Xi Jinping centered on an ambitious goal to increase bilateral trade to $30 billion in the coming years. The leaders also reviewed a substantial portfolio of joint investment projects valued at approximately $60 billion, signaling a robust commitment to industrial cooperation.

Beyond regional alliances, Uzbekistan continues to pursue a diversified economic strategy. Recent initiatives include the launch of a joint investment platform with the United States to support sectors such as energy, critical minerals, and logistics. This move complements the country's ongoing efforts to integrate into the global market, including active negotiations for World Trade Organization (WTO) accession, which the government aims to finalize by 2026.

While the nation experiences rapid economic growth, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan has issued warnings regarding potential economic overheating. With growth rates exceeding potential levels, officials are advocating for disciplined fiscal spending and maintained interest rates to ensure long-term stability. These measures align with international advice to optimize public investment and foster sustainable private sector development.
