Uzbekistan Drives Major Economic Shift from Raw Cotton to High-Value Manufacturing
Comprehensive agricultural reforms and industrial investments fuel steady economic expansion across Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan is rapidly accelerating its structural transformation by moving away from raw commodity exports toward finished goods and diversified agriculture. The government under President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has systematically dismantled older command-style agricultural practices, drastically reallocating hundreds of thousands of hectares once reserved strictly for cotton fields into productive orchards, horticulture, and food security crops to combat regional climate and water strains.
According to economic reviews reported by The Times Of Central Asia, the country has shifted from exporting basic fiber to building a domestic processing powerhouse. Uzbekistan's broader textile manufacturing sector generated approximately $2.6 billion in exports in 2025, while direct raw cotton shipments dropped substantially to under $400 million, reflecting widespread domestic industrial processing and finished garment manufacturing.
This agricultural pivot accompanies broader macroeconomic momentum throughout the Central Asian republic. Data from international institutions, including The World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, confirms that Uzbekistan's real GDP growth has maintained an annual average above 6% over recent years, supported by structural overhauls, high domestic investment demand, and lucrative shipments of commodities such as gold.
Key regional connectivity projects, notably the China-Kyrgyzstan-Uzbekistan railway, are further positioning the landlocked nation as an essential Eurasian transit corridor. Coupled with expanding international private capital and major infrastructure initiatives across Tashkent and the Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan continues to solidify its role as one of the most proactive market reformers across Central Asia.
