Uniqlo Abandons Planned Sock Price Hikes Following Consumer Backlash

In a notable shift in strategy, the casual apparel giant Uniqlo has officially scrapped its plans to raise prices on its widely popular sock collections. The company had previously announced that, starting in November, it would increase the cost of its "50-Color Socks" and discontinue its long-standing multi-pair discount bundles. These changes were initially intended to offset the financial strain caused by rising raw material costs and the ongoing depreciation of the Japanese yen.

The proposed adjustments had sparked immediate and widespread negative feedback from Japanese consumers, who viewed the items as essential daily necessities. By maintaining the current pricing structure, Uniqlo is responding directly to the concerns of its customer base, who are already navigating a period of persistent inflation that has tightened household budgets across the country.

While the company had originally planned to lift the price of individual pairs to 390 yen—up from the current 290 yen—and eliminate the popular bulk-purchase deals, those revisions have now been canceled. This decision highlights the delicate balance retailers must maintain when attempting to protect profit margins in a challenging economic environment while simultaneously preserving brand loyalty.

Despite this specific reversal, Uniqlo continues to face broader pressures. The retailer has implemented price increases on other items, such as its "Kando" line of jackets and pants, as part of a wider effort to manage the impact of global logistics expenses and currency fluctuations. For now, however, the company has chosen to prioritize customer sentiment regarding its staple sock products, ensuring they remain accessible at their established price points.
