President Lee Views Recent Kospi Pullback as Natural Market Adjustment
South Korean leadership rejects direct intervention, focusing instead on long-term corporate governance reforms.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has characterized the recent downturn in the nation's equity markets as an inevitable correction following a period of rapid growth. Addressing the volatility that has impacted the Kospi, the President noted that while the retreat from earlier highs has been significant, it represents a necessary phase of market normalization rather than a cause for alarm.
Despite the substantial loss in market capitalization—estimated at approximately 182 trillion won—the administration has firmly ruled out direct government intervention. President Lee emphasized that the state should avoid interfering with market-driven processes, advocating instead for a hands-off approach that allows the economy to find its natural equilibrium.
Rather than attempting to artificially prop up stock prices, the government is intensifying its focus on corporate governance improvements. The administration’s strategy centers on curbing management abuses and fostering a business environment that prioritizes shareholder rights. By enhancing transparency and fairness, officials hope to move the market beyond the persistent "Korea discount" and toward a more robust "Korea premium."
Financial authorities remain confident in the underlying strength of the domestic economy. Finance Minister Lee Hyung-il highlighted that the Korean won has shown signs of stabilization, supported by a healthy current account surplus and strong export performance. Officials maintain that these economic fundamentals provide a reliable safety net against external volatility.
While some analysts have expressed concern over the pace of the recent sell-off, particularly within the semiconductor sector, the government maintains that domestic stocks remain fundamentally undervalued. By prioritizing structural reforms over short-term market manipulation, the administration aims to build a more sustainable and attractive investment landscape for both local and international participants.
