Ontario Superior Court Finalizes $213.5M Sun Life Class-Action Settlement

The Ontario Superior Court of Justice has officially sanctioned a $213.5 million settlement to resolve a protracted national class-action lawsuit against Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada. This agreement marks the conclusion of a legal battle that first began in 2010, centering on allegations regarding the improper administration of specific universal life insurance policies. The court deemed the resolution to be fair, reasonable, and in the best interest of the affected class members.

This significant payout is widely recognized as the largest settlement in the history of Canadian life insurance policy disputes. The litigation involved policies originally issued by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. (MetLife) between 1985 and 1998, which were later administered by Sun Life. The dispute specifically concerned the management of products known as Universal Plus, Flexiplus, and OptiMet.

Approximately 70,000 current and former policyholders are eligible to receive benefits under the terms of the settlement. While the court granted approval for the agreement, Sun Life has maintained its position, denying any wrongdoing throughout the duration of the 14-year legal process. The settlement aims to provide monetary compensation to those impacted by past increases in the Cost of Insurance and various administrative fees.

Following the court's approval, the claims process is expected to move forward in the coming months. While the settlement was formally confirmed in late 2026, details regarding individual payment distributions and specific application deadlines are currently being finalized for the eligible class members. Legal representatives for the plaintiffs noted that the resolution brings a definitive end to a complex case that required years of dedicated litigation and provincial funding support.
