In a significant milestone for the South Korean financial sector, KB Kookmin Bank has been appointed as the lead arranger for a massive 10.7 trillion won ($8 billion) syndicated loan. This financing initiative is designed to support a broader 12.6 trillion won project aimed at building advanced AI computing infrastructure for the domestic technology leader, Naver Corp.

This deal represents the nation's first-ever GPU financing arrangement, signaling a shift in how large-scale technology projects are funded. By moving beyond traditional real estate or industrial asset financing, the project utilizes a specialized structure where a special purpose company (SPC), established by the global investment firm Brookfield, will acquire high-performance graphics processing units and related hardware.

Under the terms of the agreement, the acquired computing assets will be supplied to Naver Cloud through a long-term contract. The loan structure is uniquely tailored to the project's specific investment schedule, with repayment supported by the cash flow generated from these long-term service agreements. This approach allows for the distribution of heavy upfront capital costs while ensuring a stable supply of computing power for Naver’s AI operations.

KB Kookmin Bank is overseeing the entire financial process, including the design of the loan structure and the negotiation of key terms. The bank is joined by several other major domestic financial institutions, including Hana Bank, Shinhan Bank, Woori Bank, and NH Investment & Securities, to complete the record-breaking syndicated loan.

Industry experts view this transaction as a pivotal moment for productive finance in South Korea. By successfully channeling capital into high-growth, technology-driven sectors, the participating banks are setting a precedent for future investments in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence landscape.
