Coastal India Braces for Severe Cyclone Murasu
Authorities in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are on high alert as a severe cyclonic storm approaches the coast following recent devastation in Odisha.

Coastal regions of India are currently on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) tracks the progression of Cyclone Murasu. The storm, which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, is projected to make landfall along the southern coast of Andhra Pradesh between late November 2 and November 3. Packing wind speeds estimated between 100 and 110 kmph, the system poses a significant threat to infrastructure and public safety in the region.
This weather event follows closely on the heels of Cyclone Arnab, which recently battered the coast of Andhra Pradesh and caused widespread flooding in neighboring Odisha. Reports indicate that Cyclone Arnab resulted in at least six fatalities and impacted over 1.18 lakh people, with landslides emerging as a critical challenge for local authorities. Relief and restoration efforts in the affected districts remain ongoing as the state prepares for the arrival of the new storm.
In response to the looming threat, the government has mobilized emergency services and deployed disaster response teams to mitigate potential damage. Tamil Nadu has also directed district collectors to maintain a state of high alert due to forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall expected over the next three days. Schools in Chennai have been closed as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety during the inclement weather.
Named 'Murasu'—a term meaning 'war drum'—the cyclone is expected to weaken after its inland movement following landfall. While the immediate focus remains on disaster management and protecting coastal communities, the recurring nature of these storms highlights the ongoing vulnerability of India's eastern coastline to extreme weather patterns. Authorities continue to urge residents to follow official advisories and remain in safe shelters until the storm passes.
