Coastal India Braces for Cyclone Murasu Following Deadly Storm

Coastal regions of India are on high alert as the nation prepares for the arrival of Cyclone Murasu. The storm, which has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, is projected to make landfall between Nellore and Narsapur in Andhra Pradesh during the night of November 2 and early hours of November 3, 2026. Packing wind speeds of up to 120 kmph, the system poses a significant threat to the region's infrastructure and safety.

This new weather emergency follows closely on the heels of Cyclone Arnab, which struck the coast on October 28. The previous storm resulted in at least six fatalities and caused widespread destruction, particularly in the Ganjam and Kandhamal districts of Odisha. Officials report that over 1.18 lakh people were impacted by the initial storm and subsequent flooding, with landslides emerging as a critical challenge for rescue teams.

In response to the ongoing crisis, the government has mobilized extensive resources. An eight-member inter-ministerial central team is scheduled to visit Odisha to assess the extensive damage caused by the earlier cyclone. Meanwhile, disaster management teams are working on a war footing to clear debris and restore essential services in the affected areas.

Beyond the immediate weather threats, the country is grappling with other pressing issues. In the capital, Delhi is facing hazardous air quality, leading to the implementation of new pollution restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-II). Simultaneously, political activity remains high, with the INDIA bloc staging protests against election officials, highlighting the complex landscape of current events across the nation.
