Canadian Auto Sales Maintain Momentum with Third Monthly Increase

The Canadian automotive sector has sustained its upward trajectory, recording a third consecutive month of growth in August. According to the latest figures from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc., the market saw a 5.4% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. Industry analysts estimate that approximately 168,000 vehicles were sold throughout the month, a notable improvement over the 160,000 units recorded in August 2025.

Despite this positive trend, industry experts emphasize that the market has yet to return to the robust levels observed prior to the pandemic. Andrew King, managing partner at DesRosiers, noted that current sales figures remain significantly lower than the peak performance seen between 2017 and 2019, when August sales consistently exceeded 180,000 units.

Nevertheless, the recent performance is being viewed as a resilient outcome for the sector. Analysts suggest that achieving these gains is particularly impressive given the backdrop of ongoing geopolitical tensions and the complex trade disputes currently affecting relations between Canada and the United States.

Looking toward the immediate future, the outlook remains cautious. DesRosiers has indicated that sales in September could potentially decline when measured against the same month in 2025. Market observers point to an escalating tariff war and a persistent affordability crisis as primary factors that may dampen consumer confidence and lead households to tighten their budgets in the coming months.
