UN Demands Inquiry Following Death of Staffer in Houthi Detention

The United Nations has issued a formal demand for a thorough and independent investigation into the death of Mohammad el-Shami, a staff member of the UN Human Rights Office who passed away while in the custody of Houthi authorities. El-Shami had been held by the group since June 2024, and his family was only recently notified of his death, which reportedly occurred more than a month prior to the announcement.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed deep concern over the lack of transparency surrounding the incident. He has called for the immediate disclosure of all medical and detention records to clarify the circumstances of the staffer's death. The UN leadership emphasized that the family deserves to know the truth and that there must be accountability for any wrongdoing that occurred during his period of arbitrary detention.

Secretary-General António Guterres also voiced his profound sadness and outrage regarding the tragedy. This incident marks the second time a UN employee has died while being detained by the Houthis, following a similar loss involving a World Food Programme worker in early 2025. The UN has repeatedly sought information regarding the health and status of its detained personnel, but these requests have largely gone unaddressed by the Houthi leadership.

Currently, dozens of UN staff members and humanitarian workers remain in custody, raising significant alarms regarding the safety of those still held. The United Nations continues to advocate for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained personnel, warning that such actions severely hinder the organization's ability to provide essential humanitarian support to the people of Yemen during a period of intense conflict and instability.
