Tragic Stampede at Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal Leaves 19 Dead in India

A devastating stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata has resulted in the deaths of at least 19 people, with another 25 individuals sustaining injuries. The tragedy occurred during the height of the festive season, as massive crowds gathered to participate in community celebrations. Local medical facilities are currently treating the survivors, with several victims reported to be in critical condition.

In response to the catastrophe, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has ordered a high-level safety review of all major puja venues across the state. A specialized committee, led by the Principal Secretary of Disaster Management, the Director General of Fire Services, and the Additional Director General of Police, has been tasked with evaluating crowd control measures, emergency exit accessibility, and structural integrity at prominent locations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences to the families affected by the incident. The central government has announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured, providing immediate financial relief to the victims' families during this difficult time.

Authorities have initiated a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crush, with reports indicating that at least 12 individuals have been detained in connection with the event. A sitting judge is expected to lead a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to ensure a thorough and transparent probe into potential lapses in safety protocols.

This incident has prompted a broader conversation regarding public safety management during large-scale religious gatherings in India. As the state government works to implement comprehensive new guidelines, officials are urging organizers to prioritize crowd management strategies to prevent future tragedies at high-traffic venues.
