Tragedy and Unrest Grip India as Kolkata Mourns and Protests Escalate

A devastating stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata has claimed the lives of at least 19 people, with 25 others sustaining injuries. The tragedy occurred during the festive celebrations, prompting West Bengal authorities to launch a high-level safety review of all major puja venues. A committee led by senior disaster management and police officials has been tasked with auditing crowd control measures and structural safety to prevent future disasters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep condolences to the families affected by the Kolkata incident, announcing an ex gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the kin of the deceased. Meanwhile, in a separate road tragedy near Gwalior, 13 devotees were killed after a truck crashed into a temple wall, further compounding the national sense of grief during the festive period.

Beyond the accidents, the political climate in India remains volatile. In the national capital, protests against the Election Commission of India have intensified. Demonstrators, including members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), gathered near Mandi House to demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, leading to multiple detentions by Delhi Police.

These protests are part of a broader movement by opposition groups who have raised concerns regarding electoral roll revisions and the integrity of the voting process. As authorities struggle to manage both the aftermath of the public safety crises and the escalating political demonstrations, the government faces mounting pressure to address both infrastructure oversight and democratic grievances.
