India Navigates Global Shifts Amid Sanctions Waivers and Economic Growth

As of mid-October 2026, India continues to prioritize its energy security following a significant development regarding international sanctions. Reports indicate that a waiver granted by the United States regarding Russian crude oil has provided the nation with necessary breathing room, allowing it to maintain its status as a major importer of Russian energy. This policy shift is viewed as a critical move to stabilize domestic supply chains amidst ongoing global geopolitical volatility.

On the economic front, the nation remains focused on its long-term goal of becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047. Recent data shows a robust GDP growth of 7.8% in the June quarter, surpassing initial expectations. While the financial sector shows resilience—evidenced by HDFC Bank reporting a 4.7% rise in quarterly profit—authorities are closely monitoring domestic inflation and the expanding yield spread between India and the U.S. to guide future monetary policy.

Infrastructure development remains a cornerstone of the government's agenda. DP World has announced plans for a substantial investment ranging from $3 billion to $5 billion, targeting port concessions and logistics projects, including the ambitious Vadhavan port. Simultaneously, the government is preparing to roll out a new data centre policy to address the surging power demands of the digital economy, as peak power consumption has consistently exceeded 250 GW throughout September.

Public health and safety regulations are also seeing updates. The national food safety regulator has proposed a ban on added sugars in infant food products for children up to six months old, reflecting a proactive approach to public health standards. Meanwhile, the country continues to manage various regional challenges, including infrastructure maintenance and disaster response, as seen in recent efforts to improve road connectivity and manage the impacts of adverse weather conditions across several states.
