Economic Hardship and Hunger Crisis Deepen in Pakistan

As Pakistan navigates a complex period of political and economic instability, the most vulnerable segments of society are facing an unprecedented cost-of-living crisis. Recent reports highlight that home-based workers are currently earning as little as Rs50 per hour, a wage that fails to keep pace with persistent inflation and soaring utility costs. Advocates speaking on International Home-Based Workers Day emphasized that this systemic exploitation requires urgent collective action and structural reform to alleviate the burden on the working class.

Beyond the struggle for fair wages, the nation is grappling with a severe hunger crisis. Data indicates that poverty levels have climbed significantly, rising from 21.9% in 2018-19 to 28.9% by 2024-25. Pakistan is now identified as one of the ten countries most severely affected by food insecurity, with millions of citizens facing emergency-level conditions that precede famine. Regional tensions and restricted access to essential resources continue to exacerbate these fragile conditions.

Economic pressures are further compounded by a volatile currency and shifting fiscal policies. While the government attempts to manage the economy through various reforms and fuel price adjustments, the average household remains under immense strain. The Pakistan Rupee has faced continued downward pressure, trading near 276 against the US dollar, which further inflates the cost of imported goods and essential food items.

Political volatility remains a constant backdrop to these economic challenges. With ongoing debates regarding governance, security incidents in various provinces, and a tense political climate, the path toward economic recovery remains fraught with difficulty. Experts suggest that while some macroeconomic indicators may show minor fluctuations, the daily reality for the common citizen remains defined by the struggle to secure basic necessities in an increasingly expensive environment.
