Cyclone Arnab Batters India's East Coast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has confirmed that the very severe cyclonic storm 'Arnab' has completed its landfall process along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. The powerful weather system brought destructive wind gusts reaching up to 150 kmph, causing significant concern for local authorities and residents across the region. Coastal districts, including Visakhapatnam and Anakapalli, have already reported heavy rainfall, with some areas recording over 260 mm in a single day.

In response to the impending threat, state governments initiated large-scale evacuation efforts to move thousands of residents from vulnerable low-lying areas to safer shelters. Emergency response teams, including the National Disaster Response Force, remain on high alert to manage potential flooding and infrastructure damage. Authorities have also taken precautionary measures such as closing schools and colleges in several districts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh to ensure public safety.

Transportation networks have faced major setbacks due to the storm, with officials reporting the cancellation of at least 61 trains to prevent accidents. Fishermen have been strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea as the storm continues to churn, creating hazardous conditions. While the cyclone is expected to weaken as it moves further inland, meteorologists warn that its sprawling rainbands will likely continue to trigger heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across multiple states through the end of the week.

Beyond the immediate weather crisis, the region remains focused on disaster preparedness and recovery. Power utility companies are working on contingency plans to restore electricity quickly in the event of widespread outages. As the situation evolves, the government continues to monitor the storm's trajectory to mitigate the impact on agriculture and local livelihoods in the affected coastal belts.
