Cyclone Arnab Batters India as Recovery Efforts Begin

The eastern coast of India has been hit by the severe impact of Cyclone Arnab, which made landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam earlier this week. The storm, characterized by high-velocity winds reaching up to 150 kmph, caused significant disruption across the region. Tragically, authorities have confirmed that five people lost their lives in Andhra Pradesh due to the cyclonic conditions.

In the wake of the disaster, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the cyclone has begun to weaken after its six-hour landfall process. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has been actively monitoring the situation, coordinating with senior officials to address infrastructure damage. While minor disruptions, such as fallen trees, were reported in several locations, emergency response teams were deployed promptly to clear debris and restore normalcy.

Beyond the immediate weather crisis, the political landscape in India remains active. The ruling BJP has organized nationwide protests following controversial remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father. The BJP has characterized these comments as deeply offensive, leading to demonstrations at party headquarters across various states.

Meanwhile, the government continues to focus on administrative and diplomatic priorities. The Union Cabinet recently approved a 3% increase in dearness allowance for central government employees to help offset rising costs. Additionally, in a significant diplomatic move, India has extended an invitation to Pakistan to attend an upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in New Delhi, marking a notable development in regional engagement.
