Cyclone Arnab Batters India as Political Tensions Rise

Eastern India is currently grappling with the aftermath of Cyclone Arnab, a powerful storm that made landfall between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam. The cyclone, which struck with wind speeds reaching up to 150 kmph, has resulted in at least five confirmed fatalities in Andhra Pradesh. Authorities and disaster response teams have been working tirelessly to manage the impact, as the storm caused tree falls and minor infrastructure disruptions across several locations.

While rescue and relief operations continue, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted that the system has begun to weaken. Despite the dissipation of the storm's peak intensity, heavy rainfall remains a concern for regions including Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, prompting ongoing vigilance from local administrations.

On the diplomatic front, India has extended an invitation to Pakistan to attend an upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting in New Delhi. This move marks a significant development in regional engagement, representing the first such invitation since the events surrounding Operation Sindoor.

Domestically, the political climate remains charged. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has organized nationwide protests in response to controversial remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father. The ruling party has characterized the comments as offensive, leading to a sharp escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the two major political blocs.

Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet has moved to support central government employees by approving a 3% increase in dearness allowance. As the nation balances disaster recovery with these complex political and economic developments, citizens remain focused on both the immediate relief efforts in the east and the evolving national discourse.
