Zheng Qinwen Stages Remarkable Comeback to Reach US Open Quarter-Finals

In a display of extraordinary mental fortitude, Zheng Qinwen has secured her place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 US Open. The Chinese star produced a breathtaking turnaround on Arthur Ashe Stadium, erasing a significant 0-5 deficit in the opening set to ultimately dismantle six-time major champion Iga Swiatek with a final score of 7-5, 6-3.

This victory marks a significant milestone for the 23-year-old, who has navigated a challenging path through the tournament as a qualifier. After battling back from a difficult start, Zheng found her rhythm, reeling off seven consecutive games to seize control of the match. Her ability to remain composed under pressure against a top-tier opponent highlighted the growth and determination that have defined her recent career.

Zheng’s journey to the final eight has been characterized by her refusal to concede, even when facing overwhelming odds. This latest performance follows a similarly gritty third-round victory against Madison Keys, where she also overcame a 5-0 deficit in the deciding set. Such results have earned her a reputation as one of the most dangerous competitors in the draw, particularly when her back is against the wall.

Having successfully moved past the physical setbacks of a previous elbow injury, the Olympic gold medalist is now playing with renewed confidence. Her tactical adjustments and improved baseline consistency proved too much for Swiatek, who struggled to maintain her early momentum as the match progressed.

Looking ahead, Zheng is set to face either Naomi Osaka or Elena Rybakina in the next round. As she continues her campaign in New York, the tennis world remains captivated by her ability to flip the script in high-stakes moments, proving once again that no lead is safe when facing her on the court.
