Virginia Man Arrested Following Vandalism of Iwo Jima Monument
A 27-year-old suspect faces felony charges after allegedly using a sledgehammer to decapitate a figure at the Quantico memorial.

A Virginia man is in police custody after allegedly causing extensive damage to the Iwo Jima monument located near Marine Corps Base Quantico. Authorities from the Prince William County Police Department responded to reports of vandalism late Tuesday night, where they discovered 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano actively striking the memorial with a sledgehammer. The incident resulted in the decapitation of one of the soldiers depicted in the iconic sculpture.
Law enforcement officials have estimated the cost of the destruction to be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Beyond the removal of the statue's head, the attack caused significant structural harm to the memorial, which serves as a tribute to the historic flag-raising during the Battle of Iwo Jima. The suspect was detained at the scene without further incident.
Following his arrest, Soriano has been charged with several serious offenses, including felony destruction of property, trespass with the intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument. Court records indicate that he is currently being held without bond as he awaits a scheduled court appearance.
The monument, a site of significant historical and military importance, remains under investigation as authorities assess the full extent of the damage. The Prince William County Police Department continues to process the scene, and the case is expected to move forward through the local judicial system in the coming days.
