US Marine Indicted for Murder and Robbery in Okinawa
A 20-year-old Marine faces formal charges following the death of a Japanese woman in Naha earlier this month.

Japanese prosecutors have officially indicted a 20-year-old U.S. Marine on charges of robbery and murder following the death of a 39-year-old woman in Okinawa. The suspect, Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, who is stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was taken into custody on October 4 after being spotted by local police in the city of Okinawa. The indictment follows an incident that occurred on October 3 at a hotel in Naha, the prefectural capital.
According to the formal charges, the victim, identified as Anna Yagi, died from suffocation after being strangled with a telephone cord. Prosecutors allege that the Marine also stole the victim's backpack, which contained her wallet and other personal belongings. The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the accusations and the victim's age.
This incident has sparked widespread public indignation across Japan, reigniting long-standing tensions regarding the heavy U.S. military presence on the island of Okinawa. Local residents have frequently expressed concerns over the conduct of service members stationed at the various military installations in the prefecture, and this latest development has intensified calls for a review of base operations.
Government officials have responded sharply to the tragedy, with Japan's prime minister condemning the act as a heinous crime. While the Naha District Public Prosecutors Office has not confirmed whether the suspect has entered a plea, the legal proceedings are expected to be closely watched. If convicted, the Marine could face severe penalties, including the possibility of life imprisonment or the death penalty under Japanese law.
