Unsecured Dashboard Reveals Extensive Tracking of Foreigners in China
A leaked police database exposes how authorities aggregate private data to monitor the movements and activities of foreign nationals.

A recently discovered, unsecured web dashboard has provided a rare look into the sophisticated surveillance infrastructure used by Chinese authorities to monitor foreign nationals. The platform, identified as the Dynamic Control Platform for Overseas Personnel, was uncovered by cybersecurity researchers who found it accessible on the open web. While the system appeared to be in a testing phase, it contained authentic, highly sensitive data regarding individuals residing within China.
The database functions as a centralized hub, aggregating information from a variety of sources to build comprehensive profiles on foreign residents and visitors. According to reports, the system integrates data from facial recognition cameras, visa records, mobile application activity, and official entry-exit documentation. By pulling these disparate data points together, the platform allows security officials to track the real-time locations, social connections, and historical movements of those under observation.
Researchers noted that the system specifically targets individuals deemed of interest, including foreign journalists, students, and citizens from various Western nations. The dashboard reportedly displayed detailed personal information, such as passport photos, birth dates, marital status, and even religious affiliations. In some instances, the system logged specific encounters, showing when individuals were captured on surveillance footage at locations ranging from shopping centers to religious sites.
This discovery highlights the immense scale of China’s digital monitoring capabilities, which rely on a vast network of over 700 million surveillance cameras and advanced data-processing tools. The existence of such a platform raises significant concerns regarding civilian privacy and the potential for state-sponsored intimidation. While the Chinese government maintains a massive surveillance apparatus for its own population, this leak confirms that foreign nationals are also subject to intense, systematic scrutiny while within the country's borders.
