U.S. Orders Partial Diplomatic Withdrawal Following Deadly Saudi Airport Strike

The United States Department of State has issued an ordered departure for non-emergency government employees and their families currently stationed in Saudi Arabia. This directive follows a surge in hostile activity by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi militia, which has increasingly targeted critical infrastructure within the kingdom, including major international airports and energy facilities.

The most recent escalation occurred on Wednesday evening when a strike hit King Fahd International Airport in Dammam. Saudi aviation authorities confirmed that the attack resulted in two fatalities—a Saudi national and an Indian resident—while eight other individuals sustained injuries. Although operations at the airport were temporarily disrupted, officials reported that the facility has since resumed normal service.

In addition to the airport strike, regional security remains precarious following a separate drone attack on the Shaybah oil field, a key site operated by Saudi Aramco. That incident reportedly claimed two additional lives, further heightening concerns regarding the safety of personnel in the Eastern Province. These events are part of a broader pattern of violence that has seen over 20 people killed in attacks on Saudi airports since the beginning of October.

In response to the deteriorating security environment, the U.S. government has implemented strict travel protocols for its staff, requiring special authorization for any movement through Saudi airports. The State Department’s decision to reduce its diplomatic footprint reflects growing anxiety over the Houthis' ability to bypass existing air defense systems and their persistent intent to disrupt international travel and energy production.

As tensions escalate, the international community remains focused on the stability of the Gulf region. The U.S. embassy in Riyadh and its satellite consulates are currently coordinating the withdrawal of affected staff, while security analysts continue to monitor the frequency and sophistication of the ongoing Houthi offensive.
