Turkish Football Faces Massive Integrity Crisis Amid Betting Probe

The Turkish football landscape is currently grappling with a profound integrity crisis as the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has moved to suspend 448 club officials and staff members. This disciplinary action follows an extensive investigation into illicit betting activities that have allegedly permeated the sport over the past five years. The suspended individuals, who held various roles within clubs across the nation's top two divisions during the 2026-27 season, have now been referred to the federation’s disciplinary committee for further review.

Among those caught in the widening net are prominent figures in the sport, including the president of Trabzonspor, Ertugrul Dogan, and the vice-president of Besiktas, Hakan Daltaban. In response to the allegations, some officials have defended their actions by noting that betting companies previously maintained close ties with clubs through sponsorships and public events, leading to a misunderstanding regarding the severity of maintaining personal betting accounts. Despite these explanations, the TFF remains firm in its commitment to enforcing strict regulations that prohibit players, coaches, and officials from participating in gambling activities.

This latest development is part of a broader, multi-year effort to cleanse Turkish football of corruption. The current probe builds upon a series of scandals that began in late 2025, which saw over 1,000 professional players and nearly 150 referees suspended for similar violations. The federation has characterized these events as a significant moral challenge for the sport, vowing to restore public trust and ensure that professional competitions remain free from the influence of betting markets.

Legal authorities have also taken a proactive stance, with criminal investigations running parallel to the federation's internal disciplinary processes. Previous phases of this crackdown resulted in the arrest of club chairmen and match officials, with some cases involving allegations of direct match-fixing. As the TFF continues to tighten its oversight, the football community in Turkey remains under intense scrutiny, with many calling for systemic reforms to prevent future breaches of professional conduct.
