Treasury Secretary Bessent Launches 'Operation Economic Outcast' Against Iran
New U.S. sanctions target key Iranian economic sectors in a bid to sever global financial lifelines.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has officially initiated Operation Economic Outcast, a sweeping financial campaign designed to isolate Iran from the global economy. Described by the administration as an economic D-Day, the strategy aims to systematically dismantle the networks and facilitators that allow Tehran to bypass international restrictions. The initiative represents a significant escalation in the U.S. government's efforts to exert pressure on the Iranian regime.
Under this new directive, the Treasury Department is targeting five critical sectors of the Iranian economy: shipping, aviation, technology, gold, and digital assets. By focusing on these specific lifelines, officials intend to degrade the regime's ability to fund its military and procurement activities. Secretary Bessent emphasized that the objective is to ensure Tehran stands alone by cutting off the revenue streams that sustain its operations.
As part of the rollout, the Treasury has already moved to sanction nearly 60 individuals and entities accused of providing material or financial support to Iran. These measures include the suspension of general licenses that previously allowed for certain remittance payments. The administration has made it clear that it is prepared to use the full reach of American power to penalize any foreign entities that continue to maintain financial ties with the Iranian government.
While the administration has issued a stern warning to international trading partners, including China, to sever their connections with Tehran, Secretary Bessent noted that the current approach provides a window for entities to change their behavior. However, he cautioned that this is a final opportunity, and those who choose to remain tethered to the Iranian regime should expect to face severe financial repercussions. The U.S. remains committed to identifying and exposing any facilitators that attempt to undermine these sanctions.
