Tragedy in Bend: Four Killed in Oregon Elementary School Shooting
A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary before being stopped by a bystander.

A devastating act of violence unfolded on Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, leaving four people dead and two others in critical condition. Authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old assailant entered the campus and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three children—aged 5, 8, and 11—and one teacher.
The incident, which occurred in the early afternoon, prompted an immediate and massive law enforcement response. As the situation escalated, a local community member intervened by confronting the shooter. Officials reported that the bystander, who was legally carrying a firearm, pursued the suspect into the school and fatally shot him, effectively ending the active threat.
In addition to those who lost their lives, two other individuals—a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher—were rushed to a nearby hospital. Both remain in critical condition as the community grapples with the aftermath of the attack. The school, which serves students from kindergarten through fifth grade, was placed under a strict lockdown, as were several neighboring campuses as a precautionary measure.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz addressed the public during a press conference, confirming the identities of the victims have not yet been released. Investigators are currently working to determine if the teenage shooter had any prior connection to the school or a specific motive for the attack.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek acknowledged the profound impact of the tragedy, specifically noting the difficult position of the bystander who took action to stop the gunman. This event marks the 28th mass killing in the United States this year, according to data tracked by the Associated Press and USA Today, further intensifying the national conversation regarding school safety and gun violence.
