Tragedy in Bend: Four Killed in Oregon Elementary School Shooting
A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary before being stopped by an armed bystander.

A quiet community in Bend, Oregon, is reeling after a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School on Thursday. Authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old suspect entered the campus and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three children—aged 5, 8, and 11—and one teacher. Two other individuals were reported injured and remain hospitalized following the violent incident.
The sequence of events began shortly after 1 p.m. when reports surfaced of a shooter firing at a vehicle outside the school. According to law enforcement, the suspect then forced his way into the building. An armed community member who witnessed the suspect’s entry followed him into the school and fatally shot the teenager, effectively ending the attack before police arrived on the scene.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz stated that officers reached the school within minutes of the initial dispatch. While the immediate threat was neutralized by the bystander, the investigation into the motive and the specific circumstances of the confrontation is ongoing. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek acknowledged the bravery of the individual who intervened, noting the profound emotional weight such an action carries for those involved.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Bend-La Pine school district announced the cancellation of all classes for Friday. Families were directed to a local church to reunite with students who had been evacuated from the campus. This incident marks another somber addition to the ongoing national conversation regarding school safety and gun violence in the United States.
