Tragedy at Silver Rail Elementary: Four Killed in Oregon School Shooting
A 16-year-old gunman killed three children and a teacher before being stopped by a bystander at a Bend elementary school.

A devastating act of violence occurred on Thursday at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, leaving four people dead and two others critically injured. Authorities confirmed that a 16-year-old suspect forced his way into the building by firing at locked doors, initiating a harrowing event that prompted an immediate lockdown of the campus and surrounding schools.
The victims of the attack included three children, aged 5, 8, and 11, as well as one teacher. Additionally, a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher were transported to local hospitals in critical condition. The community remains in shock as officials work to piece together the circumstances surrounding the assailant's entry and his potential connection to the school.
According to Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz, the situation was brought to an end when a bystander who was legally armed witnessed the suspect entering the school and pursued him inside. This community member confronted the teenager and fatally shot him, preventing further loss of life. The suspect was discovered deceased inside the facility shortly after law enforcement arrived on the scene.
Preliminary reports indicate the shooter utilized a pump-action shotgun during the attack. While the investigation is ongoing, officials have not yet determined if the suspect had any prior relationship with the victims or the school. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed deep sorrow over the incident, acknowledging the profound grief of the families involved and the difficult actions taken by the civilian who intervened.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Bend-La Pine school district announced the cancellation of all classes and extracurricular activities for its 32 schools on Friday. The incident has drawn national attention, marking another somber moment in the ongoing conversation regarding school safety and gun violence in the United States.
