South Korean Markets Plummet 8% Amid AI Investor Exodus

South Korea’s financial markets experienced a severe downturn on Thursday, with the benchmark KOSPI index tumbling approximately 8% in a single session. This sharp decline reflects a broader global retreat from semiconductor and artificial intelligence-related assets, as investors grow increasingly skeptical about the sustainability of current AI infrastructure spending. The market rout marks a significant shift in sentiment, pushing the index toward its lowest levels in months.

The sell-off was particularly brutal for the nation's tech giants, with industry leaders Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix both recording losses exceeding 9%. These companies, which have long served as the backbone of the Korean equity market, were caught in a wave of high-velocity liquidations as foreign investors aggressively offloaded their holdings. Reports indicate that foreign capital outflows reached over US$1.8 billion during the morning session alone.

Market volatility became so extreme that the Korea Exchange was forced to intervene to maintain order. Officials activated a sell-side sidecar mechanism early in the day to suspend program trading, followed by a full 20-minute circuit breaker as the index losses deepened beyond the 8% threshold. These emergency measures were designed to curb panic selling and provide a brief cooling-off period for participants.

Beyond the immediate concerns regarding AI monetization, the market is also grappling with macroeconomic pressures. Persistent worries over potential Federal Reserve interest rate hikes have dampened risk appetite, making capital-intensive tech sectors less attractive. As the KOSPI extends its losing streak to seven consecutive sessions, analysts are closely monitoring whether this correction represents a temporary adjustment or a more fundamental reassessment of the global AI boom.
