Shannon Taylor Secures Democratic Nomination in Virginia’s 1st District
The Henrico County prosecutor advances to the general election to challenge longtime incumbent Rob Wittman.

Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor has emerged victorious in a crowded seven-way Democratic primary for Virginia’s First Congressional District. Following the August 4 election, Taylor secured the party's nomination, positioning herself to challenge Republican incumbent Rob Wittman in the upcoming November 3 general election.
Taylor, who has served as the elected prosecutor in Henrico County for 14 years, was widely viewed as the establishment favorite throughout the primary campaign. Her candidacy received significant backing from prominent Virginia Democrats, including Governor Abigail Spanberger and U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. Additionally, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee provided organizational and fundraising support as part of its strategic effort to flip Republican-held seats.
Throughout her campaign, Taylor emphasized her extensive background in public safety and outlined a legislative agenda focused on combating government corruption, which includes a proposed ban on congressional stock trading. Her platform resonated with voters in a district that stretches from the Richmond suburbs to the state's eastern coast, an area often characterized as a competitive battleground.
While the First District has historically leaned toward the Republican Party, Democrats are viewing it as a key target in their broader effort to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives. The district's political landscape remains dynamic, particularly following recent electoral shifts in the region. Taylor will now turn her focus toward the general election, where she faces the challenge of unseating Wittman, who has held the seat since 2007.
