Real Madrid Demands Super League Setup Costs from English Clubs

Real Madrid has officially initiated a push to recover financial contributions from the six Premier League clubs that withdrew from the European Super League project shortly after its 2021 launch. The Spanish club maintains that these English teams remain liable for the initial setup costs incurred during the formation of the competition. Reports suggest that these outstanding expenses could total as much as €80 million.

The six clubs in question—Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur—were among the nine founding members who exited the project within three days of its announcement due to intense public and institutional backlash. Real Madrid asserts that the liability for these early expenditures was clearly defined in the original agreements signed by all twelve founding members.

For years, the burden of these startup costs has been carried by the remaining backers of the project, specifically Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Juventus. While the Super League initiative effectively collapsed following widespread opposition and subsequent legal settlements, Real Madrid is now seeking to settle the accounts by pressing the English giants for their share of the financial obligations.

Most of the Premier League clubs involved have remained silent regarding the demand, with Tottenham Hotspur explicitly declining to provide a comment. This development follows a period of significant legal turbulence in European football, including a February 2026 agreement between Real Madrid and UEFA that aimed to resolve long-standing disputes and formally conclude the Super League project. It remains unclear how the English clubs will respond to these latest financial claims.
