Political and Economic Challenges Mount Across Pakistan
From emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to a deepening hunger crisis, the nation faces a complex period of instability.

The political landscape in Pakistan remains volatile following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The federal government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, justified the move by citing a deteriorating law and order situation and the provincial administration's alleged failure to effectively combat terrorism. This decision has drawn sharp criticism from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which governs the region, labeling the intervention an undemocratic overreach.
Beyond internal political friction, the country is grappling with a severe hunger crisis. Recent reports indicate that Pakistan is among the ten nations most heavily impacted by food insecurity in the region. Economic fragility, exacerbated by rising poverty rates—which climbed to 28.9% in the 2024-25 period—has left millions struggling to access essential resources, further straining the social fabric of the nation.
On the international front, Pakistan continues to navigate a complex geopolitical environment. While the government has pledged support to Saudi Arabia and is actively engaging in regional diplomacy, including upcoming SCO meetings, it faces ongoing security challenges, such as recent border clashes with Afghanistan. Simultaneously, the nation is taking steps to modernize its administrative infrastructure, with the government set to begin the mandatory issuance of e-passports starting October 23.
Economic indicators reflect the broader uncertainty, with the Pakistani Rupee showing slight fluctuations against the US Dollar. Despite these pressures, the government is pushing for structural reforms, including efforts to address power sector inefficiencies and combat corruption within the Federal Board of Revenue. As the administration attempts to balance these competing crises, the path toward long-term stability remains a subject of intense national debate.
