PCA Partners with Mitsui to Pilot Nanotechnology in Coconut Farming
The Philippine Coconut Authority is testing advanced agricultural technology to boost yields and modernize the nation's top export.

The Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) has officially entered into a strategic partnership with Japan’s Mitsui Group to launch a pilot program testing nanotechnology in coconut farming. This initiative marks a significant step in the government's ongoing efforts to modernize the agricultural sector and secure the future of the country's most valuable export crop.
PCA Administrator and CEO Dexter Buted emphasized that the collaboration is designed to introduce cutting-edge innovations that could fundamentally transform local farming practices. By integrating advanced technology, the agency aims to enhance overall farm productivity, improve the health of coconut trees, and increase the resilience of plantations against environmental stressors.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. highlighted the broader economic implications of this project, noting that modernizing the coconut industry is essential for maintaining global competitiveness. He stated that such investments are expected to provide a substantial boost to the incomes of rural farming communities and strengthen the nation's export earnings, which reached a record $3.57 billion in the previous year.
This technological trial aligns with the administration’s broader vision of a technology-driven and sustainable agriculture sector. If the nanotechnology applications prove successful, they could allow farmers to achieve higher yields while utilizing fewer inputs, thereby promoting more efficient and environmentally conscious production methods.
Beyond this specific partnership, the PCA continues to pursue a multi-faceted approach to industry growth. This includes the Massive Coconut Planting Program, which seeks to plant 100 million palms by 2028, as well as ongoing training programs for farmers in hybridization and nursery management to ensure the long-term sustainability of the industry.
