Pakistan Calls for Urgent Reform of UN Security Council Veto Power
Islamabad warns that the current veto mechanism fosters institutional paralysis and deepens global inequalities.

During a recent session of the United Nations General Assembly, Pakistan officially advocated for the abolition or significant restriction of the veto power held by permanent members of the UN Security Council. Islamabad’s representative, Gul Qaiser Sarwani, argued that the current system grants an unfair level of influence to a select few nations, which ultimately undermines the credibility and effectiveness of the entire organization.
Pakistan expressed strong opposition to any expansion of the Security Council that would include additional permanent members with veto rights. According to the Pakistani delegation, such a move would only perpetuate historical privileges and create new centers of power, further deepening existing global inequalities. The nation warned that adding more veto-wielding members would exacerbate the current state of institutional paralysis that frequently prevents the Council from addressing urgent international crises.
This diplomatic stance comes as part of a broader push by various nations to restructure the Security Council to be more responsive to its primary mandate of maintaining global peace and security. Pakistan emphasized that any reforms to the veto mechanism must remain consistent with the provisions of the UN Charter, ensuring that the body functions in a more equitable and transparent manner.
By calling for these changes, Pakistan is positioning itself as a voice for smaller and developing nations that often find their interests sidelined by the geopolitical maneuvering of the permanent five members. The debate highlights the ongoing tension between the desire for a more democratic international order and the entrenched interests of the world's major powers.
