Opposition parties announce joint struggle against governor rule and emergency

Demand supremacy of constitution, sovereignty of parliament and holding of transparent elections

Opposition parties have announced joint struggle against governor rule and enforcement of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa demanding supremacy of constitution, sovereignty of parliament and holding of transparent elections.

Opposition Leader in National Assembly Mahmood Khan Achakzai, announcing contacts with all opposition parties and convening All Parties Conference, has said that option of leaving assemblies is also available, however we believe in peaceful and constitutional struggle and are also ready for negotiations. On other hand constitutional petitions filed against enforcement of governor rule and emergency have been fixed by Peshawar High Court for hearing on October 20.

Talking at press conference in Peshawar High Court, Mahmood Khan Achakzai said that he has come to express solidarity with people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa because according to him federal government has ended elected government of province by taking unconstitutional step. He said that they have come to Peshawar High Court because elected government of four crore people of province has been ended. He said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf won seats in elections, but government was given to someone else, assembly members were disqualified and serious objections also came to light on electoral process.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai said that in no country should there be ban on meeting prisoner, founder of PTI is being forced on agreement and in past same behavior was adopted with Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, according to him same thing is happening today also in government of Muslim League (N) and Peoples Party.

He raised question that where is elected Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sohail Afridi, information should be given about him because it is his constitutional right. He claimed that incidents of disappearance of provincial ministers, assembly members and workers are also alarming.

He said that this is not time to sit silent but to stand for rights of people and constitutional protection, we will not throw stones at anyone nor adopt path of violence but will do peaceful struggle. He said that if government talks about negotiations then we are also ready for negotiations, policy should be made in parliament and all institutions should work remaining within their constitutional limits.

Opposition Leader said that in response to offer of negotiations they have put forward their demands, which include supremacy of constitution, reversal of controversial amendments, making parliament real source of power and establishment of independent commission for transparent elections. He said that until parliament is made real center of decision making, problems of country cannot be solved. Contacts with all opposition parties are ongoing and all will be invited in All Parties Conference.

Mahmood Khan Achakzai mentioning natural resources of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said that first right on minerals is of people of province and rising above political differences everyone will have to unite for protection of homeland and rights of people. He said that decision to merge FATA into Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was also taken in one minute, therefore constitutional and democratic procedure should be adopted in matters of national importance.

Balochistan National Party chief Akhtar Mengal said that those who call themselves creators of constitution, they themselves are tearing constitution apart. According to him, by imposing governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, whole province is being accused of terrorism, although operations against terrorism are ongoing for long time in Balochistan as well, but instead of situation improving there whole province is in grip of unrest.

He questioned whether problems can be solved with such measures? Akhtar Mengal claimed that elected Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been picked up while reports of Speaker and ministers disappearing are also coming. He said that people coming through Form 47 are sitting in houses and such system cannot last long.

Opposition Leader Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas said that lawlessness is at peak in country and if rulers are not able to run system then they have occupied one province. According to him, government ministers have also admitted failure of system. He alleged that those who stole mandate want to suppress voice of objections and protest.

Allama Raja Nasir Abbas referring to increase in poverty said that remaining silent on current situation of country is against demands of love for Pakistan. He clarified that whatever circumstances are, they will remain steadfast on their stance and struggle.

On other hand petitions challenging emergency and enforcement of governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Peshawar High Court have been fixed for hearing on October 20. Chairman Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Barrister Gohar Ali Khan in his petition has termed measure of October 11, 2026 as unconstitutional and prayed to declare it void.

According to Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, after approaching High Court, if needed matter will also be taken to Federal Constitutional Court. According to him, way of filing direct petition in constitutional court is also available, however approaching High Court first was considered better.

Opposition leaders expressed resolve that they will continue their struggle for supremacy of constitution, protection of public mandate, provincial rights and sovereignty of democratic institutions.
