Nigeria Makes History with First U-17 Women’s World Cup Title

In a landmark moment for African football, Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, known as the Flamingos, secured their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title. The team triumphed over Japan with a 2-1 victory in the final held in Rabat, Morocco, on November 7, 2026, marking the first time an African nation has hoisted the trophy in this tournament.

Nigeria established control early, with Awawu Bashiru breaking the deadlock in the 39th minute following a defensive error by the Japanese goalkeeper. Shortly after the second half commenced, Oluebube Umejiaku extended the lead, putting the Flamingos in a commanding position. Although Japan’s Fuki Ito managed to find the net in the 80th minute, Nigeria’s defense held firm to protect their narrow lead until the final whistle.

This championship run was particularly notable given the team's challenging start to the tournament. After suffering an opening-match defeat to Poland, the squad demonstrated remarkable resilience by winning their subsequent six matches to reach the summit. Head coach Akeem Busari praised his players for their unwavering determination and collective spirit, noting that the team approached the final with the mindset of gladiators.

Individual excellence also defined Nigeria's campaign, with standout performer Oluebube Umejiaku receiving the Golden Ball as the tournament's most valuable player. Reflecting on the victory, Umejiaku credited the team's success to their composure and mutual encouragement on the pitch. This historic achievement not only cements the Flamingos' place in sporting history but also serves as a significant milestone for the development of women's football across the African continent.
