Neymar Receives Two-Match Ban for Mouth-Covering Violation

Santos forward Neymar has been issued a two-match suspension by Brazil's Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) following a controversial incident during a recent match against Bahia. The disciplinary action stems from the player covering his mouth while engaging in a verbal altercation with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor. This gesture was deemed a direct violation of the Vinícius Law, a protocol established to prevent players from concealing their speech during on-field disputes, which could potentially hide discriminatory or abusive language.

The regulation is named after Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior, who previously alleged that an opponent used a jersey to cover their mouth while directing racial slurs at him during a Champions League fixture. In the match against Bahia, the referee dismissed Neymar after the player approached his opponent and obscured his mouth with his hand. Reports indicate that the situation escalated further after the red card, with the 34-year-old attempting to confront the opposing bench before being restrained by his teammates.

In addition to the two-match ban for the protocol violation, Neymar is already serving a separate suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards. Consequently, the veteran forward will be sidelined for a total of three matches, with his return to the pitch not anticipated until late November. While Neymar’s legal representatives argued that the hand gesture was an instinctive reaction, the tribunal upheld the sanction.

Both the player and his club, Santos, retain the right to appeal the decision. This incident marks another high-profile disciplinary case for the former Brazil international, who has previously faced scrutiny under new league rules aimed at curbing time-wasting and improving on-field conduct. As the situation develops, the football community continues to monitor how strictly these new communication protocols will be enforced across the Brazilian Serie A.
