Lithuania Bolsters Infrastructure Security Following Starlink Sabotage Attempt

Lithuanian officials have launched an intensive investigation after an attempted arson attack targeted a facility housing SpaceX Starlink satellite infrastructure near Vilnius. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of October 18, involved the use of flammable liquids and containers left at the site. Security personnel at the facility successfully extinguished the flames before significant damage could occur, ensuring that Starlink operations remained unaffected.

Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius officially classified the event as an act of sabotage. While investigators are still working to identify the perpetrators, the government has pointed to a potential Russian connection. This assessment aligns with recent warnings from the Lithuanian Defense Ministry regarding Moscow's interest in targeting critical infrastructure throughout the Baltic region.

This event is not an isolated occurrence; it follows a pattern of similar sabotage attempts against Starlink installations in Poland and Bulgaria. Officials believe these coordinated efforts are designed to undermine Ukraine’s military capabilities, as the satellite network serves as a vital communication tool for Ukrainian forces and drone guidance systems.

In response to the threat, the Lithuanian government has moved to significantly increase both physical and technical security measures at more than 15 critical infrastructure sites. Prime Minister Sinkevičius emphasized that the state will dedicate additional resources and personnel to protect essential services, including energy and information technology, from further hostile interference.

As the investigation continues, the Lithuanian National Security Commission has convened to discuss the incident and evaluate the expansion of law enforcement powers to counter foreign-led hybrid warfare. While the Kremlin has dismissed allegations of involvement as baseless, Baltic and European authorities remain on high alert, viewing these attacks as a deliberate escalation in the ongoing regional security crisis.
