Leonardo Positions Kyiv Subsidiary as Strategic Hub for Defense Acquisitions

Leonardo SpA, the Italian state-controlled defense conglomerate, is actively utilizing its newly established Kyiv subsidiary as a strategic outpost to identify and secure potential acquisitions within Ukraine’s rapidly evolving military-technology sector. By maintaining a direct presence on the ground, the company aims to tap into the unique operational expertise that Ukrainian firms have cultivated throughout the ongoing conflict.

CEO Lorenzo Mariani has emphasized that the company’s local unit is tasked with scouting for innovative partnerships and investment opportunities among Ukraine’s network of small and midsize enterprises. According to leadership, the high level of ingenuity displayed by local startups in designing and manufacturing effective defense solutions represents a significant asset for European industrial planning and procurement.

Beyond scouting for new technology, the Kyiv branch serves as a critical site for testing advanced hardware. Leonardo has confirmed that it plans to conduct the first field demonstrations of its Michelangelo air-defense system in Ukraine before the end of the year. This initial testing phase will focus on an artillery-based layer designed to counter mass drone threats, a capability that has become increasingly vital in modern warfare.

This expansion into Ukraine aligns with Leonardo’s broader corporate strategy to accelerate growth through targeted acquisitions and collaborative ventures. As European defense spending continues to rise, the company is prioritizing the integration of cutting-edge battlefield data, AI-enabled software, and drone technology to bolster its competitive edge in the global market.
