Kimi Antonelli Secures Pole Position for United States Grand Prix

Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli delivered a masterful performance during qualifying at the Circuit of the Americas, securing the top starting spot for the upcoming United States Grand Prix. The Italian racer clocked a blistering lap time of 1:34.035 in the final session, effectively holding off his closest challengers to claim his seventh pole position of the 2026 season. This result marks a significant milestone as he continues his pursuit of his maiden Formula 1 world championship.

Despite Ferrari showing strong pace throughout the practice sessions, Antonelli managed to find the necessary speed when it mattered most. He finished 0.179 seconds ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who will start alongside him on the front row. Isack Hadjar, also representing Red Bull, secured the third position, rounding out a highly competitive top three as the grid prepares for Sunday's showdown.

This pole position is particularly crucial given the championship stakes. Antonelli currently leads the standings by a substantial margin and has a mathematical opportunity to secure the title this weekend in Texas. To achieve this feat, he must win the race while relying on specific finishing positions from his rivals, including teammate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who qualified fifth and sixth respectively.

While team principal Toto Wolff has suggested that clinching the title this early remains a difficult task, Antonelli’s performance on Saturday has undoubtedly increased the pressure on his competitors. The young driver has remained focused on the task at hand, emphasizing a desire to perform at his best throughout the weekend. As the lights go out on Sunday, all eyes will be on the Mercedes driver to see if he can convert this qualifying success into a championship-defining victory.
