FIFA Labels UEFA Legal Actions a 'Smear Campaign'
Global football governing body hits back at European counterparts over failed World Cup investment proposal.

The governing body of world football, FIFA, has formally accused UEFA of orchestrating a smear campaign against its leadership. This sharp rebuke follows recent legal maneuvers by the European football authority, which is seeking to obtain documents from U.S.-based entities regarding a controversial and now-abandoned plan to sell commercial stakes in the World Cup. FIFA characterized these legal requests as little more than public relations tactics designed to damage the reputation of its president, Gianni Infantino.
At the heart of the dispute is the defunct 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' (FFE) project. The initiative, which aimed to secure $4.2 billion in private equity investment by selling a 20% stake in the World Cup, faced intense backlash from across the sport. UEFA, in particular, had threatened a potential boycott of future FIFA competitions if the proposal proceeded, arguing that the plan undervalued the tournament and threatened the financial stability of smaller footballing nations.
UEFA has since signaled its intent to pursue criminal proceedings in Switzerland, alleging that the FIFA president engaged in 'criminal mismanagement' and promoted an artificially low valuation for the commercial rights. To support these potential claims, UEFA filed applications in the United States to compel the disclosure of internal documents and testimony from parties involved in the negotiations.
In its own court filings, FIFA has pushed back against these efforts, describing the legal pursuit as a 'fishing expedition.' The organization is currently seeking to have the requests for document access either deferred or denied. FIFA maintains that the allegations are baseless and that UEFA’s actions are motivated by a desire to maintain its own influence over the European football elite rather than genuine legal concerns.
As the two organizations remain locked in this high-stakes legal standoff, the tension underscores a deepening rift within the sport's governance. With Gianni Infantino facing a potential re-election bid in 2027, the outcome of these legal challenges could have significant implications for the future of international football administration.
