FIFA Alleges UEFA Orchestrating Smear Campaign Against President Infantino
Global football governing body hits back at legal challenges regarding a scrapped World Cup commercialization plan.

The governing body of world football, FIFA, has formally accused UEFA of conducting a coordinated smear campaign against its president, Gianni Infantino. This sharp rebuke follows recent legal maneuvers by the European football authority, which has sought to obtain evidence from U.S. courts regarding a controversial and now-abandoned proposal to sell stakes in FIFA’s major tournaments.
In a recent court filing submitted in Colorado, FIFA characterized UEFA’s legal actions as performative. The organization argued that while these requests are presented as legitimate judicial pleadings, they function primarily as public relations tools intended to damage the reputation of FIFA and its leadership. FIFA maintains that the legal discovery requests lack merit and are being used to fuel a broader narrative against the current administration.
The dispute centers on the 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' (FFE) initiative, a plan that would have allowed private investors to acquire commercial rights to the men’s and women’s World Cups. Following significant backlash from various stakeholders, FIFA withdrew the proposal on August 1. UEFA has since alleged that the plan was a vehicle for financial mismanagement and has indicated it is exploring the possibility of filing criminal complaints against Infantino in Swiss courts.
FIFA has pushed back against these allegations, asserting that the FFE was merely a proposal that required democratic approval from member associations. Furthermore, FIFA’s legal team has challenged the validity of UEFA’s discovery requests in the United States, arguing that the European body is seeking evidence for a criminal proceeding that does not currently exist and which UEFA lacks the formal authority to initiate.
As the conflict between the two organizations intensifies, the legal battle highlights deep-seated tensions within the global football hierarchy. With Infantino’s fourth term as president approaching in March 2027, the ongoing scrutiny over his commercial strategies continues to be a focal point of international sports governance.
