FIFA Alleges UEFA Orchestrated Smear Campaign Against President Infantino

The relationship between world football’s governing body, FIFA, and its European counterpart, UEFA, has reached a new low following a sharp escalation in legal hostilities. FIFA has formally accused UEFA of conducting a coordinated smear campaign directed at its president, Gianni Infantino, and the organization’s leadership. This public confrontation follows UEFA’s recent efforts to secure evidence through the United States court system, which they intend to use for potential criminal proceedings in Switzerland.

At the heart of the dispute is the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a controversial and now-abandoned proposal that would have seen a private investment fund acquire a significant stake in FIFA’s commercial operations. UEFA has alleged that the plan involved criminal mismanagement and that Infantino attempted to push through a valuation that was fraudulently off-market for his own personal gain. The proposal, which sparked widespread backlash, was shelved shortly after its introduction.

In response to UEFA’s legal filings in the U.S., which seek to compel the disclosure of internal documents, FIFA has filed a motion to intervene. The global body characterized UEFA’s legal actions as a "fishing expedition" rather than a legitimate pursuit of justice. FIFA’s legal team argued that the documents submitted by UEFA are essentially public relations tools designed to damage the reputation of FIFA’s leadership rather than substantive legal pleadings.

Furthermore, FIFA contends that UEFA lacks the legal standing to initiate such discovery proceedings, noting that no formal criminal investigation currently exists in Switzerland. FIFA maintains that the FFE was merely a proposal that required broad support from member associations before it could ever be enacted. As the two organizations remain locked in this high-stakes legal battle, the tension underscores a deepening rift within the upper echelons of international football governance.
