FIFA Alleges UEFA Orchestrated Smear Campaign Against President Infantino

The relationship between world football's governing body, FIFA, and its European counterpart, UEFA, has reached a new low following a sharp escalation in legal hostilities. FIFA has formally accused UEFA of conducting a coordinated smear campaign and a "fishing expedition" aimed at undermining the reputation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the organization's leadership. This public confrontation follows a series of legal filings initiated by UEFA in United States courts, which seek to obtain evidence for potential criminal proceedings in Switzerland.

The core of this dispute involves the FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), a controversial and now-abandoned proposal that would have seen FIFA sell a 20 percent stake in its commercial operations—valued at approximately $4.2 billion—to private investors. UEFA has vehemently opposed the plan, alleging that the proposal was developed without proper consultation with member associations and that it involved potential financial misconduct. UEFA’s legal team has specifically accused Infantino of promoting a "fraudulently off-market price" for personal gain.

In response to these allegations, FIFA has filed motions in U.S. District Courts, including in Colorado and New York, requesting that the discovery process be dismissed or deferred. FIFA’s legal representatives characterized UEFA’s court filings as little more than public relations maneuvers disguised as legal pleadings. They argue that the European body is attempting to leverage the American judicial system to support a narrative of wrongdoing where no formal criminal case currently exists.

FIFA maintains that the FFE was merely a preliminary proposal that never moved forward, and it has criticized UEFA for what it describes as an aggressive attempt to influence global football politics. While UEFA had previously threatened to boycott FIFA competitions over the investment plan, the focus has now shifted to this intense legal battle. As both organizations remain based in Switzerland, the outcome of these U.S. discovery requests could have significant implications for the future of their leadership and the governance of international football.
