FIFA Alleges UEFA Orchestrated Smear Campaign Against Infantino

The tension between world football's governing body, FIFA, and its European counterpart, UEFA, has reached a new peak. In a recent court filing, FIFA formally accused UEFA of conducting a coordinated smear campaign aimed at damaging the reputation of FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the organization's leadership. This escalation follows UEFA's recent efforts to secure evidence through U.S. courts regarding a controversial and now-abandoned proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup and other major competitions.

UEFA has been seeking discovery of documents and testimony from U.S.-based entities, signaling a potential move toward criminal proceedings in Switzerland. The European body is reportedly investigating allegations of mismanagement related to the proposed 'FIFA Forward Enterprise' project. FIFA, however, has characterized these legal requests as a mere 'fishing expedition' designed to generate negative publicity rather than pursue legitimate legal grievances.

In its response to the U.S. District Court, FIFA argued that UEFA’s filings are essentially disguised press releases intended to fuel public hostility. The governing body has requested permission to contest these discovery applications, asserting that the actions taken by UEFA are part of a broader, ongoing effort to undermine the current FIFA administration.

This conflict is the latest in a series of disputes between the two organizations. Earlier this year, FIFA publicly denounced what it described as a concerted effort to destabilize its leadership, following reports regarding historical financial matters during Infantino's tenure at UEFA. As both sides prepare for potential legal battles, the discord highlights a deepening rift within the highest levels of international football governance.
