Eurozone Economic Growth Decelerates Amid French Contraction

The euro area's economic momentum softened in October, with the latest flash composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) falling to 51.9 from 53.1 in September. While the reading remains above the 50-point threshold—indicating that the region is still in a state of expansion—it represents the slowest pace of growth in four months, falling short of market expectations.

The primary driver behind this regional cooling is a sharp downturn in France. After a brief period of growth in September, the French private sector has slipped back into contraction, with its composite PMI dropping to 48.4. This decline is largely attributed to a volatile political climate, rising government borrowing costs, and widespread social unrest, including reports of protests and looting that have disrupted local business operations.

Beyond the immediate impact of civil disturbances, French firms are grappling with heightened pessimism regarding the domestic economic outlook. Data indicates that new orders have seen their most significant decline since May, as both domestic and international clients delay projects and reduce spending due to ongoing uncertainty. This lack of confidence has created a drag on the broader eurozone, even as other major economies within the bloc maintain a more resilient, albeit slowing, growth trajectory.

For the European Central Bank, the latest data presents a complex challenge. While the softening business activity suggests a potential need for caution, policymakers are simultaneously monitoring persistent inflationary pressures. The combination of a cooling economy and stubborn price signals has fueled market speculation regarding the future path of interest rates, as officials attempt to balance the risks of economic stagnation against the necessity of maintaining price stability.
