Elena Rybakina Defends Ningbo Open Title with Dominant Victory
World number one Elena Rybakina secures her fourth title of the season by defeating Leylah Fernandez in straight sets.

World number one Elena Rybakina successfully defended her Ningbo Open crown on Sunday, delivering a commanding performance to defeat Canadian challenger Leylah Fernandez. The top-seeded Kazakh secured the championship with a decisive 6-2, 6-2 victory, marking her first trophy since ascending to the top of the world rankings following her success at the US Open.
Rybakina’s path to the final was solidified on Saturday when she overcame Diana Shnaider in a hard-fought straight-sets match. Despite a challenging opening set that required 11 set points to resolve, the world number one maintained her composure to advance. Her opponent, the 30th-ranked Fernandez, had reached the final after a victory over Marie Bouzkova, aiming for her second title of the season.
In the championship match, Rybakina proved too formidable for the unseeded Fernandez. Utilizing her powerful serve and consistent baseline play, the Kazakh broke her opponent's serve four times throughout the contest. While Fernandez attempted to apply pressure early in the second set, Rybakina remained unflappable, absorbing the intensity and forcing critical errors to maintain control of the match.
This victory marks a significant milestone in Rybakina's 2026 campaign, which has already included major titles at the Australian Open and the US Open. By retaining her title in Ningbo, she has further solidified her position as the world number one and taken a substantial step toward securing the year-end top ranking as she prepares for the upcoming WTA Finals.
