Elena Rybakina Clinches Year-End World No. 1 Ranking in Tokyo
A dominant victory at the Pan Pacific Open cements Rybakina's status as the top-ranked player heading into the season finale.

Elena Rybakina has officially secured the WTA year-end No. 1 singles ranking for the first time in her professional career. The 27-year-old achieved this milestone following a decisive 6-2, 6-3 victory over her compatriot Yulia Putintseva during the second round of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. This result ensures that no other player can surpass her in the rankings before the conclusion of the 2026 season.
This achievement marks a historic moment for Kazakhstan, as Rybakina becomes the first player from her nation to finish a season at the pinnacle of the world rankings. Reflecting on her performance, Rybakina expressed immense pride in her consistent play throughout the year, noting that the indoor conditions in Tokyo suited her aggressive style of play perfectly.
Her rise to the top spot has been defined by a spectacular 2026 campaign. Rybakina captured two Grand Slam titles this year—the Australian Open and the US Open—further solidifying her dominance on the tour. With her previous Wimbledon victory in 2022, she now stands just one major title away from completing a career Grand Slam.
Beyond her major successes, Rybakina has maintained a high level of performance across the calendar, securing four titles this season, including a recent win at the Ningbo Open. Her ability to remain focused and aggressive, even during challenging matches, has been a hallmark of her play. She is set to be formally honored with a trophy during the WTA Finals in Indian Wells, which are scheduled to take place from November 8-15.
As she advances to the quarterfinals in Tokyo, Rybakina remains focused on her next challenge against Leylah Fernandez. Having already secured her place at the top of the rankings, she continues to demonstrate why she is currently the most formidable force in women's tennis.
