DOJ Issues Target Letters in Alaska Senate Investigation
Federal prosecutors have notified several individuals, including a prominent Democratic attorney, that they are targets in a probe regarding a spoiler candidate.

The U.S. Department of Justice has significantly intensified its criminal inquiry into the Alaska Senate race, issuing target letters to more than 20 individuals. These notifications inform recipients that they are considered subjects of a federal investigation, a move that often precedes potential indictment, though it does not guarantee that formal charges will be filed. Among those who reportedly received a letter is Marc Elias, a high-profile attorney known for his extensive work on Democratic election litigation.
At the heart of the investigation is the recruitment of a candidate who shares the same name as the Republican incumbent, Sen. Dan S. Sullivan. Federal authorities are examining whether this effort was a coordinated scheme to confuse voters and siphon support away from the sitting senator. The probe has reportedly expanded to include inquiries into potential conspiracy and donor fraud offenses, with a grand jury currently reviewing evidence.
This escalation follows reports suggesting that individuals associated with the campaign of Democratic candidate Mary Peltola may have played a role in recruiting the retired teacher, also named Dan J. Sullivan, to appear on the ballot. While the Department of Justice has issued over 100 subpoenas and ordered the preservation of various records, Democratic organizations and the Peltola campaign have consistently denied any involvement in deceptive campaign tactics.
Legal experts note that the use of target letters at this stage of an investigation is a notable development. While the practice of running third-party candidates to influence election outcomes has historically been a common political strategy, the current administration is treating these specific allegations with heightened scrutiny. As the investigation continues, those involved have characterized the federal probe as a politically motivated effort, while the Department of Justice maintains its focus on the integrity of the electoral process.
